In-Person Capstone
The in-person capstone consists of four 4-hour workshops, each corresponding to the asynchronous units: Philosophy of Leadership, Leadership Behaviors, Communication and Conflict, and Change Management. During these sessions, participants will:
- Develop a personalized leadership mission and vision that aligns with their ambitions,
- Collaborate with a certified coach to review and interpret their Leadership Practices Inventory 360 assessment results,
- Engage in activities to strengthen communication and conflict resolution skills, and
- Begin formulating a change initiative to tackle a pressing challenge in their workplace.
Leadership Practices Inventory 360 Degree Assessment
Community of Leaders sessions are marked by deep reflection and an investigation of your leadership journey to date. All attendees will participate in a high-quality, valid, and reliable 360 assessment using today's premiere tool, the Leadership Practices Inventory 360+®. The assessment is included in the program fee and is required for participation.
Continuing Education Credit
CME, CPE, CNE, and MOC credit will be available for the asynchronous and in-person portions of the Community of Leaders program.
Note: IDSA is unable to offer pediatric MOC credit for this program.
Who Should Apply?
The 2025 IDSA Community of Leaders is intended for mid-career and senior-career infectious diseases and HIV specialists across the healthcare team ascending into leadership roles within the near term or seeking to address areas of need in an existing leadership role. Unlike other physician-leader training programs, the Community of Leaders is designed by infectious diseases and HIV specialists for infectious diseases and HIV specialists.
IDSA seeks to create a personally, professionally, and academically diverse cohort each year and, as such, cannot provide an ideal candidate profile. All interested individuals should review the Eligibility Criteria and Program Description sections to see if the program fits their training needs.
IDSA is seeking to build a community of rising and established leaders. Community of Leaders participants will gain access to the exclusive and persistent Leadership Institute Alumni Community. Individuals seeking to participate in a persistent learning community and professional network are strongly encouraged to apply.
Eligibility Criteria
All Community of Leaders candidates must meet the following criteria at the time of application:
- Active IDSA membership
- Engaged in clinical practice of infectious diseases, clinical or basic research, administration, teaching in infectious diseases, public health, or a related field as a primary professional activity
- History of substantive service to the profession locally, regionally, or nationally
- Minimum of five years of relevant professional experience
- Evidence of deep intellectual curiosity and growth mindset

The 2025 Community of Leaders application has been revised to better align with our program goals and reduce the requirements placed on applicants, recommenders, and reviewers. The parts of the application are detailed below.
Part I: Acknowledgements & Certifications: In this section, you will:
- Certify Participation Requirements: Confirm you’ve read and agree to the program’s logistical details and requirements, including:
- Attendance at the live event in Arlington, VA, with specified arrival and departure times.
- Completion of preparatory work from February to May 2025, with adherence to deadlines.
- Engagement in active sharing and peer-to-peer interactions throughout the program.
- Agree to Code of Conduct: Acknowledge and commit to the IDSA Leadership Institute Code of Conduct, promoting a harassment-free environment.
Part II: Candidate Information: In this section, you will:
- Supply basic candidate profile and demographics. IDSA utilizes a holistic review process when evaluating applicants to consider individual experiences as we work to build a more diverse, resilient, and inclusive workforce.
Part III: Leadership Trajectory: In this section, you will:
- Resume/Curriculum Vitae Upload: Provide your most recent resume or CV in PDF format. This document should outline your professional experience, achievements, and any leadership roles you've held.
- Current Responsibilities: Briefly describe your role and day-to-day tasks. This helps us understand your starting point and current leadership capacity.
- Program Goals: We believe in the power of goal setting to enhance learning outcomes. Tell us what you hope to achieve in just a few sentences and how you think the IDSA Community of Leaders program will help you get there.
- Past Leadership Training: Share any previous experiences with leadership or similar training programs. This gives us insight into your continuous learning journey.
